ABOUT THE BUILD

The 4th-generation Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road has strong factory bones. It comes with an electronically locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, and Crawl Control to help it maintain traction on rocks, loose dirt, and mud, making it a solid base for moderate terrain and further customization.

ARB built this Tacoma for overland travel and trips that last several days. The upgrades were chosen to protect the truck and keep it recoverable, to give it secure storage and a covered place to sleep, and to support the added weight on tougher trails, so you can go farther from the pavement and stay out longer without giving up an easy daily drive.

OVERLAND READY

Overlanding means getting far from help and staying out there, and this build is set up for it. Armor and recovery gear protect the truck and keep it moving, the truck cap gives you secure storage and a place to sleep, the on-board compressor lets you adjust tire pressure for the terrain, and Old Man Emu suspension supports the weight of it all. Here's a closer look at each.

PROTECTION & ARMOR

Any trip into the backcountry needs vehicle protection. The Zenith Winch Front Bumper is built to withstand repeated abuse from rocks and other obstacles. It's paired with an ARB Winch and recovery points, so if the Tacoma gets stuck, it can pull itself out or be pulled out. Underneath, a front skid plate protects the underbody, and side steps keep obstacles off the rocker panels on tighter trails.

OVERLANDING

Once the truck is protected, the rest of the build is about staying out. The ARB Ascent Truck Cap turns the bed into secure, weather-protected storage that locks and unlocks with the truck's key fob, and it doubles as a covered place to sleep at the end of the day. Overland routes mix pavement with rocks and loose dirt, so the on-board ARB compressor lets you air down for traction on the trail and air back up before the drive home.

SUSPENSION

All the upgrades add weight, and the suspension has to keep up. The Old Man Emu MT64 suspension and Old Man Emu Forged Billet Upper Control Arms improve how the Tacoma handles tougher trails, and they’re built for the extra weight the truck now carries all the time.

We’re standing in a unique place at a unique time. American off-roading is a young adult, overlanding a teenager and those who swaddled and cradled them still walk among us. Interest in 4×4 is booming and, while we keep eyes on the road ahead, we pause now to recognize those who cut the trail.
